How life cover is usually calculated
Most advisers size life cover using an income replacement approach: you decide how much of your income your family would need each year, and for how many years, so the pay-out replaces the money you would otherwise have earned. That figure is then added to what's needed to clear the mortgage and debts and cover immediate costs, then reduced by any savings and cover you already hold.
How much of your mortgage you'd like cleared so your family could stay in the home.
Personal loans, car finance, credit cards or overdrafts you'd like paid off.
A cash cushion for unexpected bills — commonly 3 to 6 months of outgoings.
An estimate of funeral costs and short-term immediate expenses.
A lump sum per dependent towards school, college or university costs.
An amount you'd like to leave as a gift or inheritance to your family.
